Jakub Surovec Trail
Jakub Surovec was an important Slovak outlaw, originally from Tisovec. He started his life as a robber when he stole sheep, for which he was punished with 200 lashes. In 1739, he joined a brigand's company, but a year later he founded his own. His retinue was mainly active in the Horehronie region, but also in Poland, Liptov and in the Novohrad and Zvolen Counties. A lookout tower and a trail passing through the Čertova dolina valley are named after this important Slovak brigand. Čertova dolina valey is a protected area in the eastern part of the Vepor mountains. The reservation is part of the Muránska planina protected area.
The nature trail is 4.7 kilometres long and of medium difficulty. The trail is accessible all year round, but only in one direction, against the flow of the Furmanec brook. The starting point begins at the information centre in the Zbojská shepherd's hut and partly continues along the red marked trail of Rudná magistrála. At the beginning of your journey, you can make a stop at the lookout tower, which is built of wood and stones and provides enchanting vistas of the surrounding countryside. You continue on through grassland to the edge of the forest, where the trail markings break away from the red trail sign, continuing on through beech woodland. You walk alongside the turn-off to the cave at Remet, which you can find out about from the waymarker board texts. Gradually descend to the Čertova dolina valley. You pass under the dominant Čertov most bridge, which is part of the rack railway line running from Tisovec to Brezno.
From the viaduct it is only a short distance to the mouth of the Čertova roklina gorge. It was through this pass that the outlaw from Tisovec and his retinue escaped from the gendarmes. After a short detour to the Čertova jaskyňa cave, you will reach the mouth of the stream. In the Čertova jaskyňa cave, the outlaw's retinue of Jakub Surovec once used to hide. It is 297 metres long and 30 metres high. The ascent through the gorge leads directly through the creek bed, so you will need suitable waterproof footwear. When crossing the slippery ladders, you need to be extremely careful. After crossing the gorge, the route returns back to Zbojnínický dvor via the meadows of Pacherky and the shepherd's hut in Galička.
