Let the new trail to the spring of the Hron River take you safely away from the busy main road without any disturbances
The trail partly follows an old railwaymen's pathway, which formed a buffer along the railway. Over the years, this has been transformed into a forest trail and today it will lead you to the Hronský Tunnel. The trail also includes information boards that narrate the history of the railway construction as well as the unique technical works - the spiral tunnel and viaducts - along the 4.3 km long trail, which can take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to walk.
It's up to you where you start your stroll, with signposts and painted signs everywhere. We recommend that you start at the Kornel Stodola Tunnel - at the Telgárt Guesthouse railway station and head towards the first Telgárt loop. Immediately after you pass it, a signpost will show you that you need to turn right and let the path lead you to the most popular Chmarošský viaduct. If this shorter and less demanding route is suitable for you, you can finish your stroll with a coffee in the Depo café, just walk along the dirt path through the meadow to the main road.
Beyond the Chmarošská viaduct, towards the east, you will see terrain forming stairs, from where the trail continues. These forty steep steps represent the most challenging part of the stroll. Take your time, you will surely manage the climb. This section concludes with a viewing platform with a bench and a panoramic view of the Telgárt countryside. Railway enthusiasts will also appreciate it here. The place is located directly above the Hronský Tunnel, where you can watch the approaching trains.
From there, it's just a few steeper steps up the forest path and you're on Gregová Hill with a view of the Besník saddle. Look up and you will see a wooden shelter. This is the trail's destination - the spring of the Hron River! The Besník saddle is also a unique place where three national parks converge. On the horizon to the east lies the Slovenský raj, to the right of the main road the Muránska planina and to the left of the road the Low Tatras National Park. The Besník saddle also witnessed heavy fighting during World War II, when Telgárt was besieged and subsequently, the village was burnt down.
Descending down the hill, you will reach a dirt road and, still following the embankment on your left, you will come to a stone underpass. At first glance a very narrow tunnel, at the end of which you will find yourself above the spring of the Hron River. A few metres down, you will come to a place where you can sit by the source of our second longest river in Slovakia, the Hron River. Don't hesitate to refresh yourself!
We recommend taking the same route back as you did to the Chmarošská viaduct. Turn left here and follow the dirt road to the main road, along which you will reach the Ski Telgárt and the Depo Café.
NOTICE
The trail passes through the territory of the Low Tatras National Park, which is a 3rd level protected area. Therefore, please respect the visitor regulations of the national park and do not deviate from the designated movement routes. In this way, your mindfulness contributes to the protection of the precious meadow ecosystems. The trail passes through sections that are farmed by local farmers. Please respect the trail boundaries where the trail is fenced for livestock. Do not cross the fence or feed the cattle. If you are out walking with your four-legged companion, keep them on a lead. These places are located just past the Telgárt viaduct, in the meadow in front of the Chmarošská viaduct and in the Besník saddle just before the underpass entrance. The safety of your dog in the forest will certainly be enhanced by reflective elements. This area, especially popular thanks to its unique railway architecture, lures the visitors to look for paths leading closer to them. We remind you that entering the railroad tracks and viaducts is strictly forbidden. The track is in regular operation and trains regularly run on it. Therefore, it is extremely dangerous not only for those who have such an intention, but also for the train operators and passengers on the train. Please, let us respect each other.
