Voglov chodník

Johan Vogl's trail

Unprecedented moments are experienced walking the paths which have been mostly unknown to many people. They are moreover mystified by interesting stories from the past, with the charm of exploration in addition to enjoying the time spent in nature.

One such path is to be found between the Telgárt village to the forest above the Bacúch village, until recently known only to contemporary witnesses or hunters from Horehronie (region of the upper Hron river). It was named after Jan Vogel, whose fate is inextricably linked with hunting, the Coburgs, and the rulers of the Third Reich. Vogel came to Slovakia in 1938 and, as an experienced aristocratic manager, he was in charge of a hunting ground that stretched from municipality Pusté Pole to Polomka. The Coburgs began to build the path crossing the Low Tatras mountains. Vogel completed and improved the path to make travelling through the forest comfortable for hunters on the hunt or on occasional walks.

We would nowadays in some sections search for the remains of the trail in vain. The determined inhabitants of Telgárt did not want to allow this part of their history to become irretrievably lost in the forest. Thanks to their efforts, you can wander around its cleaned and accessible part. The path is popularly known as “Fogláč” or “Rajštag” near the village Polomka. The beautiful path section in Telgárt ends with beautiful views from the hill Ždiar. A majestic cross over the village from the high peaks. It is the highest wooden cross in Slovakia.

Route description:

There are two alternative starting points, either in the centre of the village next to the signpost opposite the primary school, or at the railway station “Telgárt Penzión”. The first route crosses the railway underpass “Telgártska slučka”, the second under the majestic Viaduct of Telgárt. Both routes connect with the Johan Vogel's trail, as you will be informed by an interesting information board that will introduce you to the history of the trail. It further leads along a very light and pleasant path for about 3 kilometres.

During the walk, you can enjoy plenty of views of the surrounding countryside and relax in the shade of the trees. You will easily reach the crossroad Three bridges (“Tri mosty” in Slovak). The wooden signpost will direct you to the right. You will climb a slight ridge to the top of the hill and finally see the majestic cross. This place offers wonderful views of Ondrejisko, Tresník, the village of Telgárt and the beautiful surrounding countryside.
