Horehronie in paintings
Oil paintings of villages and landscapes in Horehronie region by Janka Schwarzbacherová
The traditional architecture of the Horehronie region has faded away with time, leaving a few wooden cottages scattered around the villages, serving as reminders of the past. The long rows of wooden cottages, in which several families lived in the darkness of the front room, have been immortalised in the memory of older generations and have also been preserved in photographs from which the artist and ceramicist Janka Schwarzbacherová from Horná Lehota draws inspiration for her artwork. Her paintings of villages in the Horehronie region reflect the history and character of the Horehronie region as well as the people at work. Mrs. Schwarzbacherová's oil paintings represent a nostalgic flashback to the times when women used to go to the brook to wash their clothes, men used to harness their horses and travel to the fair with a wagon, or they used to go to church together dressed in festive folk costumes for Sunday mass. In her landscape paintings of Horehronie, Mrs. Schwarzbacherová immerses herself in the beauty of the region, which she captures directly with her brushstrokes, in the natural surroundings of the Horehronie region.
