Brezno Town Tower
TOWN TOWER
The town tower is one of the younger buildings and landmarks of the town. It served as a bell tower and a guardhouse. It is the third tower and its predecessors were located in a different part of the square. They were constructed with available materials, mostly wood, on stone foundations only, and thus either succumbed to fires or were damaged due to the effects of age. The remaining building material was also used for building other objects. The foundation stone of the existing tower was laid in 1830, close to where the first church in the town once stood. It underwent renovations at the turn of three centuries - the 19th, 20th and 21st ones. Testimony to the laying of the foundation stone is visible even today. Just raise your eyes and take a better look.
REMEMBRANCE OF M. R. ŠTEFÁNIK
From every floor of the tower, you can see the monumental statue of M. R. Štefánik. The decision to build it was made one hundred years ago. In 1923, the idea to enliven the boardwalk in the town square, where many people took their Sunday walk, resulted in the decision of the town's representatives to erect a monument to M. R. Štefánik in the park, where no statue stood at that time. The 10th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia was the ideal occasion for the unveiling. On the third floor you can learn about the fate of the statue, what remained in the memory of the town and what linked the town of Brezno with a city abroad, which Štefánik considered to be almost his home..
BEELS
They summoned the inhabitants of Brezno to prayers, signalled danger, and announced fires. They signalled threats to the town, but they themselves were threatened - both by fire and by war events, when they were turned into cannons. The sad event of 1779 is still preserved in an inscription on the waist of the largest bell. Take the opportunity to examine the three bells at close range, learn about their story, discover the legacy of the past and also appreciate the craftsmanship of the carpenters and bellfounders. You will find yourself in the 'heart' and you will come to appreciate the heart of the bell tower..
THE BELL-RINGER'S APARTMENT
They gazed at the world from high above and were not prideful in doing so, they lived in a majestic space despite being poor, their duties and responsibilities were extremely important, despite the fact that they did not need any education. Such were the bell-ringers of Brezno. They climbed nearly a hundred steps several times a day, not only for the sake of ringing the bell, but also because the tower was their home. On the top floor, they and their families lived their daily lives, which was indicated by the rising smoke from the chimney on the roof of the tower. Climb up to the bell-ringer's room and you will find yourself in the shoes of its inhabitants. Experience the city from a bird's eye view, in a way you can't really see it from the ground.
